Privacy policy
Press Golf (called Press on your phone) is a golf scoring and settlement app for iPhone and Android, made by an independent developer in the United States. This policy says what the app collects, why, who else receives it, and how to delete it.
Questions or requests: privacy@pressgolf.cc.
The short version
- Your account and what you enter are stored on Press's server, so they back up, move to a new phone, and sync to the outings you share.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking. Press doesn't sell or share your personal information.
- Your location is used on your phone to give distances. It's saved only when you mark a green by standing on it.
- You can delete your account, and everything it owns, at any time: here's how.
What Press collects
Your account
Your email address and password, and an account ID the server assigns. The password is stored only as a secure hash, never in readable form. The app also remembers your email address on the phone, to fill in the sign-in screen.
What you enter
- Groups and players: names, initials and Handicap Index, and when it was entered.
- Rounds: scores, games, sides, presses, junk, and the stake amounts you set. No money moves through Press. It only records what the players agreed.
- Outings: the name, date, field and games, and who joined.
- Courses: tees, ratings and hole cards; where the greens are; the hole map, out-of-bounds lines and hole notes.
- Your bag: your clubs, how far you carry each, and your usual score.
Location
Press asks to use your location only while the app is open, never in the background. When you ask for a distance, it reads your position for up to a minute and works out the yardage on your phone. That position isn't sent anywhere.
When you mark a green by standing on it, your position at that moment is saved as the green's location and synced with the course. Anyone in a shared outing on that course can then see where the green is.
The blue dot on the map is drawn by the phone's map service (see Who else receives data). You can turn location off in your phone's settings: distances then stop working, and everything else still works.
Service logs
When the app talks to the server, the hosting provider records technical details: your IP address, the app and device type, and sign-in times. They're used to run the service and keep it secure, and are deleted automatically after 7 days at most.
What Press doesn't collect
Contacts, photos, payment details, advertising identifiers, usage analytics or crash reports. Press has no ads and no analytics service in it.
Without an account
The demo data stays on your phone and is never uploaded.
Other people's information
Keeping score means typing in your playing partners' names and handicaps. Enter only what the game needs. Those names are stored with your account.
When you share an outing, everyone who joins it with its code can see that outing's field (names, handicaps and scores), its games and its course. When you join someone else's outing, its organiser and other guests see your player's name and the scores you enter.
If you're named in someone's Press account and want your name removed, email privacy@pressgolf.cc.
How it's used
Only to run the app: signing in, backing up and syncing your data, sharing outings, giving distances and maps, and sending account emails such as confirming your address. It isn't used for advertising or profiling, and it isn't sold.
Who else receives data
- Supabase hosts Press's accounts and database, in the United States (Oregon). It handles the data on Press's behalf.
- Resend sends account emails. It receives your email address and the message.
- The OpenStreetMap Foundation receives the course name when you search for a course, and sees your IP address. Its privacy policy applies.
- Overpass map servers receive a request for the course's map when you import it, and see your IP address. Press tries overpass-api.de (FOSSGIS e.V.), then maps.mail.ru and overpass.private.coffee. No account details are sent.
- Google provides the maps on Android. The Google Maps SDK receives the map's position, your IP address, and device and crash details, and Google uses them under the Google Privacy Policy.
- Apple provides the maps on iPhone, under Apple's Maps privacy terms. Apple doesn't link map use to your Apple Account.
Press also discloses information if the law requires it.
How long it's kept
- Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. There's no automatic expiry.
- Something you delete in the app (a round, course, player or club) is removed from the server the next time the app syncs.
- When your account is deleted, everything it owns is removed from the server at once. Server backups age out within 7 days.
- Data on the phone stays until you remove the app. Signing out leaves your rounds on the phone.
Your choices
- See and correct what you've entered in the app.
- Delete single items, or your whole account.
- Turn off location for Press in your phone's settings.
- Ask for a copy of your data, or ask a question, at privacy@pressgolf.cc. Press replies within 30 days.
Some US states, such as California, give residents rights to know, correct and delete personal information. Press honours those requests from everyone. It doesn't sell or share personal information, or use it for targeted advertising, as those laws define them.
Security
Everything the app sends is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Only your account, and the people in an outing you share, can read your data. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you don't use elsewhere.
Children
Press isn't aimed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has an account, email privacy@pressgolf.cc and it will be deleted.
Changes
When this policy changes, the date at the top changes too. For a significant change, account holders are told by email before it applies.
